I bought a 2001 A4 1.8tqm new. I was impressed with the fit and finish. I sold it to my brother with 8k miles, since I couldn't stand the clutch/shifter/seats (too used to BMWs). He sold it at 25k.
Watch out for the well known sludge problems that kill the oil pump and seize the motor and turbo. These cars are to be had at attractive prices, but that alone would keep me from buying one. There really isn't anything you can do about it at 98k miles. There is a reason why there aren't any used 1.8 motors.
