I don't know if this is the same video you posted, I couldn't get it to work, I assume it is. But I don't get how this is helping anything. This S80 T6 looks like it's in great shape and they just destroy the engine. You know how many parts they could get from that? The interior? The two turbos????

They could take the motors and tranny's itself then part the rest and make so much $$$ it is sick they just do that.

If you cannot tell it really hit a nerve with me.

How sad; dealers torturing cars like that. That CARS program is messed up. In a way, I agree with its intentions (getting inefficient models off the road) but destroying an otherwise well-running vehicle is insane. It would be similar to burning down old houses in order to spur new home construction.

I know how you feel tech. I felt like I was a PITA member watching a butcher house video or something. I couldn't believe what was happening. There is so much salvageable car right there. I just get pissed watching it.

Same here almost had a tear in my eye listening to it scream before it died.

I get pissed at work when I work on a R or Platinum or something pretty rare and it is in bad shape because it is neglected over the years.

Yeah, I could imagine. I wonder how many R's or Platinum's are getting traded in and destroyed just because the current owner has no idea what they're driving. That's why I want an R so bad, just so I know that I at least saved one and can keep it looking pretty.

Well from what I was looking at before on the site about the program the 850's and S70's do not meet the requirements for the program. They have to get a combined total of 18 MPG and they get 19MPG whewwwwwwwww saved a few there!!!!

Oh really?? Awesome! That makes me a feel a little better. But still, That S80? That car could have easily been recycled. It's a shame.

Not to get too political, but can anyone explain this program? When did the federal government get the ability to use tax dollars to subsidize the purchase of new cars?

The s80 in the video looked like it was in better shape than my car.

I hate to know that this program, that I am funding (and I disagree with), is feeding the deficit. Unfortunately, this is only a drop in the bucket of wasteful spending.

I watched several of the video's and it looked like the Volvo engine lasted much longer than others. I think that person could have sold that S80 for more than $4,500 but I could be wrong.

They actually have an official website http://www.cars.gov/ with the details of the program on it. I would not dl the pdf, said the file was corrupt. I guess if I just purchased a company and could crate a situation that would make people run to purchase my products, I would take a stab at it as well. Here is another site about it.
http://www.cashforclunkersfacts.com

The only thing that gets me about it is that the new vehicle only has to get 22 mpg. I'm getting that with me 850 R (and almost with me 960). I was checking the list and some how the '96 and '97 960 missed the list. The '95 960 and the '98 S90 are there but not the '96 & '97.

They need to stimulate a "Give a worker a car" program. This will help people that actually have a job, GET TO WORK so they can keep it.

I thought about trading in my '91 240 since it's turned into a bit of a money pit lately. But it doesn't come close to qualifying. I think the average is 20 or more MPG. And I'd rather get dirty learning about how my Volvo works than have to put up with the annoyances of having a sewing machine or gerbil under my tiny little fuel efficient replacement car's hood anyway.

Actually, few "cars" qualify since they have to EPA average 18 mpg or less to qualify. Most of the trade ins are old, worn out SUV's and pick up trucks which do qualify. And some really beaten up full sized vans. You can check if your proposed trade in qualifies. I was going to trade in a 1994 Buick Regal originally owned by my mother and passed down the family tree several times. But it averages 20 mpg per EPA and therefore not eligible. Maybe some old Town Cars, Grand Marquises, and Crown Vics meet the standard. But the fleet average has bee 27.5 for a long time now, and the oldest cars that qualify are no older than 25 years.

I suspect lazy videographer involved in any S80 destruction.

As some wag put it, "hey, let's borrow money from China so we can buy Kias from Korea -- sounds like a plan!"

Another lost of money.
