Shelf life in service parts
Just bought a boat with two Volvo Penta D4-260 I-B-HS engines. They are due a service now after 1000 hours. The boat came with two complete sets of genuine Volvo service parts including, oil and air filters as well as all the belts etc. The local Volvo Penta guy says he can’t use those parts because he is not sure of their shelf life.
I have been involved in mechanical engineering for decades and I have never heard of any such thing as shelf life limitations on items such as filters and belts. After physically checking all
the components for physical damage, rust and perishing I see no reason not to use them. Any thoughts ?

I think your Volvo guy want to sell you and make a profit on new parts. The oil and filter absolutely fine. Belts will be fine unless they was stored in direct sunlight for the past few years.
