Default 01 V70 whirrs/whistles.

Scenario.... this noise only occurs after the car has been warmed up 10-15 minutes into a drive. It is not consistent, but is more frequent lately. Watch the two videos and tell me what you think.

Clicky at idle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASR-m8RKuYo

Clicky at varied RPM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jve4asFO78

Thank you for any input. Grrrr..... what seemed like a great used car purchase a couple of months ago is beginning to frustrate me.

Oh, I failed to add that when this whistle is present, the engine idle tends to really bog down and almost stall. When the sound is not present, the engine runs like a champ.

Next time it does it go out and loosen the oil cap(watch for some oil splattering though) and I will BET it will stop.

If so then the Vent box or something in the vent system is clogged.

Thank you for the prompt reply. I suspected a vacuum line somewhere, but this high pitched whir sound is difficult to pinpoint in location. I'll try your suggestion.

So, I go out to the car to get her warmed up and try to reproduce the noise. No noise yet, but my check engine light is on, a new finding. This may be a blessing. Looks like I'm off for a trip to Autozone to pull the codes and find out what they mean. Grrrrr....

You need a new vent box to fix it.
You will need to remove the intake manifold to replace it.

Ok,

Old parts are all off. Where do I find torque values for the intake manifold bolts and the ETC bolts for proper install? Anybody have a pdf of that part of the service manual?

Thanks forum!

Intake is:20NM/15ft.lb
fuel rail is stage1: 10NM/7.4ft.lb stage2 75 degrees. But I would only tighten with a 1/4 in ratchet and go with that.

Fantastic!!!! Engine runs like a charm. Thank you to this forum (and to you tech) for the great support. I've put about 120 miles on since buttoning things up and there is no noted oil leak nor abnormal engine noise, nor any surging when coming off the highway to stop and go traffic. Strangely though, my homelink garage door opener is not functional now. I tried to erase the memory but never get the light in the visor to flash at me.

Glad it is running good now. Your welcome.

Did you check all the fuses for the homelink?

Default 01 s60

My 2001 S60 has started doing the same thing. I haven't tried removing the oil cap yet. I first noticed it a few days after having the fuel pump replaced at the dealer. They also did a recall on the throttle software I believe. I looked into the engine compartment and the airbox wasn't snapped onto all of the studs and one of the vacuum hoses was off of the back of it. I fixed the airbox and the vacuum hose, but it hasn't cured the problem.

Could the dealer have left something off, or done something to cause this problem, or is it just a coincidence? Am I correct in assuming the vent box needs to be replaced?

Jeez, that seems like a ton of blowby out of that engine, even with a blocked vent! I wonder what's causing so much blowby? Bad rings?
