I've got a 2001 V70 T5 in the SW Mesa area (near Gilbert and Tempe), and am loving it. I bought it in great shape for chump change with 208k miles and a 2-3 shift flare. $30 for a new B4 servo cover and it was shifting like a dream. My plans were to use it for a cross-country road trip (about 10k miles) and sell it, but the wife has gotten very attached to it. At the very least we're keeping it through our grandkids coming to visit (since it's got seven seats), but probably longer. Since buying this, our BMW 330i ZHP has been gathering dust in the garage (literally and figuratively).

I've got a set of axles and new front bearings coming to fix a little shimmy in the front end, and to get it ready for the next 100k miles of road tripping. Hard to imagine a better road trip car, all in all... it could crumble to dust tomorrow and I'm still way ahead, having saved 14k miles on our other cars.

Smile Cottonwood, AZ Volvo owner, enthusiast, service consultant

I am new to this forum but have been a member on other Volvo forums for awhile. Was based in the Phoenix metro area for many years before moving north to Sedona and Lake Montezuma, and now in Cottonwood. Currently own and service a 1987 245 DL (slightly modified) (420K+ miles), a recently acquired '96 960 Estate ("Black Beauty") (143K) and ("Spunky White Hauler") '98 V70 GLT (just rolled over 202K) which has been my daily driver since I got it last year from a salvage yard and had the head gasket done. I have had 3 other 245's before this. I have been more often dissatisfied than pleased with the work that I have allowed other mechanics to do on my cars over the years, so I have resorted to doing virtually all of it myself, even buying special tools when needed, and have done a better job in most cases because I don't have missing parts when finished. One of the first things I do after buying any pre-owned Volvo is buy a workshop service manual for the particular model series and seek out other expert Volvo service persons when I need assist. I have not yet encountered an issue that I have not been able to fix. I had not serviced any of the 5 or 6 cyl. engines until I bought the V70 GLT and 965. I love them even better than the 4 cyl. that I have become an expert with. So far, I have done minor ECU and intake mods on both to enhance performance and fuel efficiency, along with some minor exterior modifications, i.e., side marker lamps and LED DR lights. I have been a Volvo owner since 1982 and have been doing most of the service on all of them since. I am fascinated by the Volvo engineering. For me, after I find out how, they are so easy to work on when I get my head into it.

So, a note to all you "new to me" owners, I suggest that you spend the money to get a service manual (or go online nowadays) if only to learn as much about your car as possible, but it will save a veritable fortune in repair service when you at least have an idea of what the trouble is before talking with a mechanic or service manager. I think it is an economic strategy ("get the most money") of some mechanics and shops to contribute to the problems while supposedly fixing what you brought it in for, so that you will come back for other repairs. It'll always be something "different" that is causing the problem, so another repair charge.

Whoa! Thanks for letting me share. Didn't mean to get into all that. I can really get into Volvo talk. I have obtained a wealth of knowledge about Volvo cars engineering and service during the past 30+ years, and have serviced other cars and trucks as well, prefer Volvo over any other kind of vehicle, by far. It has always been my first choice before even considering other vehicles although I really like some other cars too.

I guess you might call me a Volvo enthusiast although I don't own one. I'm looking for a red (not burgundy but red) 240 or 740 and they are difficult to find. I've never seen one in AZ but a few have been for sale in CA. I test drove a 1993 240 and a 1989 740 and rejected them both, the 240 had failed emissions, the 740 needed shocks, had the check engine light on and a really bad headliner.
