Default 040 vs 960 differential

oops! That's 940 not 040.
I'm trying a little experiment to see if I can increase the gas mileage of my 940 Turbo Wagon. The stock rear end is a 3.73 to 1 ratio. I picked up the ring gear assembly(but not the pinion gear) from an early 960 wagon which is supposedly a 3.31 to 1 ratio, and an easy swap. It was an easy swap but I noticed slightly more back lash, which told me it either needs to be adjusted or 960's had a different pinion gear. What surprised me is the number of teeth on the two ring gears. My stock gears had 11 teeth on the pinion and 41 on the ring, which when divided comes out to 3.73. But, the 960 ring had 43 teeth. I was expecting less rather than more. So 11 pinion into 43 ring equals a 3.90 to 1 ratio. No cars that I know of came with that. To get a 3.31 ratio with a 43 tooth ring the pinion would have to have 13 teeth. Or, use the existing 11 tooth pinion and the ring would have to have 36.4 teeth, not possible. Can anyone confirm that 960's have a different pinion? Thanks
