1978 Volvo 242 Idle / Stalling
Just recently my car started idling really rough and almost stalling at lights etc. But once on the freeway or at higher speeds, it's ok. Can the idle be adjusted somehow or do you think it's another issue?
Any suggestions on what to do at home?
Just bought it from original owner, has 104,000 miles and has had all the regular maitenance done.
Thanks

Do you hear any kind of hissing type sound? Mine did that one morning and it was just a simple vacuum leak. I would check your vacuum lines if its just a disconnected line thats a 30 second fix and ven if its cracked and needs replacing new vacuum lines are less than 5 bucks.

Ok... My mechanic put new plugs, plug wires etc... They had difficulty removing a spark plug, that was lodged in pretty good... After they got everything done, it still idled rough... They did a compression test, and showed 0 in one of the cylindars.... I put in some fuel injection cleaner before I dropped it off att he mechanic with a full tank... Now (a day later) it is running fine, and just has a bit of a rough idle.. I am going to get that compression test redone... Is it possible for my car to run that well on only 3 cylindars?...
Confused... Is it worth fixing the engine, if that is the case?... I have all the original receipts from the original owner, body is in great shape etc...

RE: 1978 Volvo 242 Idle / Stalling
I just bought a 79 245 with 222,000 and it has the same symptoms. I have changed the fuel filter, cap, rotor, plugs ,checked for vacuum leaks, adjusted the idle mixtureand it still idles rough. So yesterday I called a fuel injection shop (one that I have dealt with before on Diesel engines) and he said what is real common in that engineis the injectors will get partially clogged and it wont idle very well. He said for $5.00 each he can clean them and test the spray pattern. So when I get a chance I am going to pull them and have it done. I will let you know if it cures the problem.
Good luck,
William
