Default 1980 242 GT not charging

Hey Folks, So I bought a volvo 242 gt and I realized that the charging system doesnt seem to be working. I checked voltage across the alternator and ground and I got like 0.4 VDC.. I didnt look at it much more but I was just curious if anyone has run into the same problem and are they still easy to find? Any idea if the 1980s had a internal or external regulator?

Also I want to drain and replace the transmission fluid.. What type of fluid would you guys recommend? I read for the M46 type F or G automatic transmission fluid?

Thanks

Keith
