Default 1985 240 GL Dies but then restarts after whacking fuel pump with screwdriver

Hi all,

I was wondering if anybody could lend some advice on where to look to fix my running problem for my 1985 240GL. Car starts and will run perfect for days at a time. Sometimes though, it will completely die right in the middle of driving down the road. There is no warning when it does this and it doesn't even sputter beforehand. I replaced the fuel pump about a month ago, so I don't think that is the problem. The weird thing is that if I crawl under the car and whack the fuel pump with the butt end of a screwdriver, it will start right back up and I'm off again. So. . . reason would dictate that it is the fuel pump failing, but after everything I've read on other posts, everybody says that a fuel pump either works or it doesn't work. So before I go and drop a bunch of cash on a new one, I was wondering if anybody has any ideas of what ELSE it could be. Wiring seems in great condition. Car has been garaged since new and nothing is dried or cracked. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Sure sounds like your pump is the culprit here, especially if it will start running after you give it a pop...I haven't heard the all or nothing theory on the pumps but then again I'm no expert on your model car. What about the wiring on the pump? Have you checked to make sure you don't have a loose or corroded connection on the pump?
