Exclamation 1986 240 Wagon Broken Down: Timing belt motionless while engine turns over

Hello everyone!

This will be my first post to the forums and one of urgency.

Today while driving my Wagon, it stalled at a red light (which I had diagnosed to fuel pump array, and am waiting on the part) and upon restarting, I revved a bit too hard and it -broke-.

At first I assumed the timing belt had gone based on the sound, but upon removing the cover and seeing the belt whole and in good health, I investigated further.

After manually turning the timing belt assembly there was a change. Having my boyfriend try to start the car as I watched, I saw the timing belt make about a half turn, then motionless, but I could now hear what I am assuming shorn gear teeth jangling around.

I reproduced this about three times then called the tow truck.

So now I am at home with this assumption:
On startup I torqued the teeth off of the gear at the base of the timing belt, and am going to have to take the entire belt assembly apart to fix it.

Am I on base here? This is my first Volvo and I'd like to keep it for awhile yet.

Please respond with advice, questions, concerns, anything. I'm savvy with my tools and can follow instructions, but I'm used to working on tractors, so bear with me.

Please and thanks Volvo community! I look forward to becoming a part of the forum and learning and helping where I can.
