1987 740 turbo wagon safety questions
Hello all. I have owned Volvo's for the past twenty years. I have had many repairs lately on my 1987 740 turbo wagon that has almost surpassed 300,000 km (new clutch system and shocks last month) and now I have to replace the heater core - ugh (basically thousands in repairs). I am very seriously considering purchasing a "new" car that many say are safer than my old wagon. My question is - does anybody out there know how safe my three year old is in an impact in the rear seat in my Volvo versus say a new CRV with curtain airbags....And how much do you think I can get for my wagon that I really do not want to part with. I find it to be an excellent travel vehicle, except for my safety concerns. thanks for an comments....

RE: 1987 740 turbo wagon safety questions
well....side impact ratings are hard to find for something that old and impact ratings for the 740 in general are tough (or seem to be....someone may chime in here with a better answer). However, the 240 has a front impact rating of 5 out 5 stars for the driver and 4 out of 5 stars for the front passenger.....the 740 wouldn't be far off. I know the rear impact for older Volvos is pretty decent too given their uniquely desined head rests.
Bering that in mind the CRV gets 5 out of 5 stars on everything and has a roll over rating 4 out of.....i don't know but 4 is a cool number. I'd have to say that for safty the CRV is probably better than the older volvo. Especialy given the child safty seat designs are generaly meant for newer vehicles.
that's my 2 cents,
