Default 1987 Volvo 240

I have a 1987 volvo 244 gl wagon. I replaced the heater motor and after putting everything back together the instrument cluster (speedometer, odometer, fuel gauge, thermometer(radiator cold/hot))doesn't work. I believe I hooked everything up correctly and have double checked multiple times. Is there a ground wire that I am missing? Fuse? Relay? Did I fry the cluster?

The speedo gets its power from a red/black wire to connector 233 pin 3, this comes directly from the ignition switch. connector 233 is the right angle 3 pin connector right next to the speedo. this power also goes to a little fuse thats on the back of the panel, which powers a 3 pin voltage regulator right near this fuse, that regulator in turn provides 10 volts for the gas gauge and temp indicator.

the rest of the instrument panel also gets always-on power from fuse 8, a green wire from the fuse panel connects to a white wire that goes into connector 31 pin 9, connector 31 is the full circular connector.

pin 32/4 is the main ground, a black wire. connector 32 is the half round one.

hmmmmm. the speedo ONLY uses the wires on that connector 233, that 233/3 red/black power wire, and 233/1 and /2 go directly to the speedo sensor in the back of the differential. one of these wires, 233/2, is also connected to ground. however, there's a 4th optional connection to the speedo, a single blue wire that goes onto the double flat spadelug near the speedo, this goes to the manual transmission upshift indicator, and is probably not connected on an automatic car. if you connect the tach to that connector, you fry the speedo. the tach red/white wire goes to pin 1 on the back of the tachometer (IF you have one, if you have the large clock, then there's no tach connection at all).

if you have the tach, there's a separate small clock to the right of the dashboard, this has a 2 pin connector, which goes to a + and - pin on the back of the tach, black wire to a pin 31, and green wire to a pin 58.

I hope this is of some help. the 1987/1988 240 greenbook schematics are more than a bit confusing. Everthing grounds to a screw near/under the forward left corner of the shifter bezel and just aft of the left lower center console attachment point.... this same ground point is used for quite a lot, including the horn, seat belt light, fuel pump relay, flasher relay, instrument panel including lighting, speedo and speedo sensor....

I do not know where to connect the right angle 3 pin speedo connector! It doesn't look like there is anything on the cluster that it will plug in to. Also thanks for your quick response back, I more then appreciate it

ah, as you face the back of the speedo, right side up, the speedo is in the middle and the tach-or-clock is on your right, on the left side of the speedo module there's an edge connector, and the 3-pin goes on there with the wires coming from the left side such that the red/black power wire is on top, the black ground wire in the middle, and the blue speedo sensor wire is on the bottom

You sir, are not only a volvo wiz but a life saver. Haha I appreciate all you have done, it worked and everything you listed was correct! Thank you for that, I traded this guy my work installing a new heater motor for his other 1987 244 wagon dl 5 speed. Will probably have more questions when it comes time to fix that thing up. Thank you for your help!!!
