Default 1990 240 starts, then immediately shuts off

Hello, I have a 1990 240 with a bizarre issue. Today, it was treated to a new water pump. Started fine, ran with no problems. Took it out on the highway, and after about 45 minutes, the SRS light came on, and the dash lights dimmed some. I pulled into a gas station and shut it off. It wouldn't restart--battery dead. Because it was an old battery, I put in a brand new one while still at the gas station. Now, it turns over great and fires, but shuts off immediately after starting. It's as though the fuel pump is cutting it off, and right away. Also, if I hold the gas pedal down some while cranking it over and starting it, it'll run ok. But as soon as I let up, it dies.So it will stay at the gas station until it can get--and stay--going.
I'm not mechanically disinclined, and have a fair bit of previous 240/740 experience, but this one is new.

Anyone have any ideas???

Thanks!!!!

sounds like an electric problem in the dashboard somewhere. hard to say. you changed the water pump, what might have gotten messed up in the process?

The 25 amp fuse for the fuel system is a consideration. When I replaced my fuse holder and fuse, the fuse literally fell out of the holder to the ground. Only good luck was keeping it running. It comes straight of the + side of the battery.

Good Luck

Had a similar problem on my 240. I thought I had a clogged fuel filter. After replacing and it didn't go away I took it to my mechanic. It was the Mass Air flow sensor.

That is a tough call. Could be the MAF, I think that runs fine with the gas down, but chokes on idle. Maybe the fuel pump relay is ailing, or the ECU.

digiulio wins the prize, it was the air flow meter. Found one on eBay for $30, free shipping. Junkyard 240's are scarce in central Indiana these days.

Yeah. I'm in the chicago area and these volvos are getting scarce in the junkyards. I always look for AMM when I am in there. Last time I was there I happened across a fairly new AMM on a smashed 240. It even had the Volvo parts department paper part number sticker on it. The guy let me have it for $25.
