Default 1991 240 Acceleration hesitation

When I start my 240 up in cold weather, it hesitates first to even start (only turns over) and then continues to hesitate upon acceleration once it does start. Once the car has gone a few blocks and begins to warm up, it drives just fine. What needs to be done to fix this???

Could be several things. Do you have a check engine light? If so you should pull the codes and post them. If not, just let us know.

I do have the Check Engine light on as well as the ABS light...I went to Advanced Auto Parts to see if they could help with the codes and they could not. How do I pull the codes?

Because you have a 91, it doesn't have an OBD-II, but I think there is a diagnostic plug (or the black box), that allows you to see the check engine light flash and essentially give you your cel codes via morse code if you turn your key to pos. 2. I've never owned a pre-96 car, but this is what I've been told works.

There are a set of boxes under the hood. Not sure where but they look like this pic below.

What you have to do is pull the cover off, take the jump wire and plug it into one of the ports, then push the button is a set of functions and the box will flash back the code to you.

Good links and pics rspi. I'm just glad for OBD-II, and being able to plug in an ultraguage to get the codes, among other things...Does anyone know if OBD-II is only required in the American versions of cars post-96?

Thanks. I'm not sure. I would imagine that a standard like that spread world wide. Most auto makers knew a few years in advance that they would have to have them in the '96 model cars. Volvo actually started installing them in mid '94 turbo 850's. My '95 850 has both. I wish more cars had both.

I seen a recent write up in the 960 section where people were making a home made OBD-II reader that would flash lights to give codes. Cost about $15 if I'm not mistaken.
