Default 1991 940 speedo help

ok i know their are issues with capacotiors leaking on the speedo and causing the speedo to malfuncution or quit. right now i have nothing then suddenly i am doing 78 mph. i seached the junkyars and found a 940 BUT its a 1992 cluster i plugged it in put no gas gauge and no speedo. i was told you can easily convert the newer dash to older model but i need to know how. i though to pull speedo itself BUT again the screws are totally different areas to attach so it cannot be done. i have a 740 volvo so i pulled a speedo but totally differt also. Now these are ALL yakaza models not vdo.

any help

i see on the back of the speedo one plug is one wire i "assume" the other screws are grounds???? maybe i can "force" one to work.

thanks ron

91-92 740/940 speedos should be the same...
I guess you have a speedo problem. Besides that, can't really figure out much from your post.

did you swap the whole instrument panel, or just the speedometer? as lev says, 91/92 should be interchangable between 740/940, same speedo AND instrument panel. later 940 instrument panels use a completely different speedo AND panel, you can swap the whole panel, but you can't swap the speedo between the panels.... but, I've been told (not confirmed) that the later instrument panel requires a different fuel level sender unit, or your gas gauge won't read correctly.

oh, I believe ABS and non-ABS cars use different speedos, too, as the 'tone ring' in the differential has more notches on the ABS cars. I dunno if there are any non-ABS 940's in the USA.

now, backing up a bit. symptoms of original panel... when it reads 78, are you in fact going that fast give or take a few? maybe the wire is intermittent/broken at the speed sending unit which is on the back of the differential in the rear axle.

ok more facts sorry the 940 is a turbo if that changes things its not the vdo and i took my 740 speedo out to install but the trip reset is centered the 940 it on the right. on the back the 940 have 4 screws that holds the speedo in almost in a offset square. the 740 4 screws but not anywhere where near the same 4 holes.

i did swap the whole cluster but lost fuel and speedo everything else worked BUT plugs wheir different between 1991 turbo and 1992 not turbo plugs not just the vacumm the placment and missing one

I was thinking i could ground one of the 4 screw holes on back of 740 speedo break of trip reset and force in cluster of 940 turbo and plug in speedo and just be happy.
