1991 volvo 240 AC removal
Hello, I have a 1991 volvo 240 wagon that had a old R12 AC system in it, I have removed most of the system except for the compressor, I was wondering how I go about removing the compressor and keeping the power steering
Thanks,
Sean

And there lies the rub! You can't. You can call IPD and see if they still have the a/c delete kit available. You could do away with the power steering. Just pull the pump and lines, top the rack off with fluid and find 2 bolts the right size and seal the rack up. Or, leave the compressor in. If you were really industrious, you could find a manual rack from a 70's model and swap it in but if you want to keep the ps, a delete kit is your best option.
Ok, thanks, ill give that a try sometime the week after next since I'm going to be going camping.
I want to keep the power steering but I have already pulled everything else from the AC out of the engine area except the damn compressor. at some point I plan to take the condenser out of the dash. Today I pulled out the drier and remaining tubes/pipes going to the compressor and condenser and proceeded to clean the engine. Almost ready to take some pics to upload.

ive seen the bracket for the 70's model 240's before they put a/c in there at all and the power steering used to be mounted exactly where the compressor is right now. what im going to do is cut the existing bracket for the compressor and re-weld the steering pump lower. other than tracking down the 70's steering pump and bracket, or leaving the compressor in there that seems to be the easiest thing to do in my mind. (i'm about where you're @ the A/c is disabled i just need to get to the cutting and welding @ some point.)

re: power steering delete. a 240 hardly needs power steering, the car is very nimble once you're rolling, the only time its hard to turn is very low speed parking lot maneuvers. how do I know this? I had to drive mine home 50 miles with a broken belt. since it was the ac/ps belt, and the alternator+water pump were fine, I knew it was fine to drive.
IPD's PS relocate kit only worked for some years, I know our 1987 was not one of them. so I just left a dead AC compressor that has a good pulley, and left the clutch unplugged. sure, its 12 lbs of dead weight, awwwwww. I also removed the evaporator when I replaced the radiator.

I did the same as Pierce, and took everything out except the compressor. Since the clutch never comes on, it is only acting as a pulley. I am tempted sometimes to see if I can install the newer R134a system, but once I look up some pricing that thought goes away and I figure I can endure.
i have not gotten around to it but someday when I have nuthin' to do i plan on removing everything that has anything to do with the AC from my 740 engine bay...'cept maybe the evaporator. So far as power steering...the guy I bought the car off of told me the PS did not work when I bought it..."here's a new pump and hoses if ya wish to install them" he said...they are still sittin' in the basement.
My '94 Dodge Colt has not had power steering for about 3 or 4 years now. And I removed all the AC stuff after I figured out that I could use the belt for Colt models w/o AC (this was before the rack gave out).
Pierce is right "the only time its hard to turn is very low speed parking lot maneuvers."
