Question 1991 Volvo 240 automatic

HI, im not sure who can answer this question because im new to forums, but i have a 91 volvo 240 that im having a problem with. First off, my engine isnt getting fuel, big problem. Im wondering if a probable concern would be the fuel pump, or there is anything inbetween on this cars fuel system such as a fuel filter than might be the problem. Or if their is a second pump, i have already located the one under the trunk of the car. One more question... My car only starts in neutral, not park, so im wondering if there is a selenoid or switch that will enable the parking brake again?

There are 2 fuel pumps. One in the gas tank and one under the drivers side of the car. This is the high pressure pump and it has a fuel filter right next to it. How do you know that it is not getting fuel? How many miles are on the car? Have you ever changed the fuel pump relay and the radio suppression relay? Depending on how many miles you have these 2 relays might be the problem. Has anyone checked the codes on the LED code block in the engine compartment? This would be a good place to start. Please give us more information on what is going on with the car. Also did someone just do a service on the car?

Before you go replacing parts it would be good to test the functioning of the pumps. Like the previous post, check to make sure it isn't the fuel pump relay. To test the pumps, use the instructions found on the following link.

http://cleanflametrap.com/transferPump.htm

It shows how to run the pumps bypassing the relay. If the pumps run when jumpering the fuses, then most likely the relay is bad. If they don't run, well then, you probably need to replace them.

Regarding the car not starting when in park, I suspect that the bushings for the transmission linkage are shot. Is your shifter really sloppy? If so, there are two plastic bushings - one on each end of the shift linkage. They are cheap and can be found at FCP Groton. You will pay more for shipping then the actual bushings cost. They are kind of a pain to install but you can do it.

Good luck

ok so to answer those questions: 1. I know the engine isnt getting fel because when i manually out fuel in the front end at the motor the engine starts willingly until the bit of gas evaporates.
2. The car has about 220, 000 kms on it
3. The Fuel pump relay or the radio supression relay have both never been changed.
4. The LED code block on the engine compartment.... We are unsure on how to check these.

We are in the process of checking the pumps and testing them. The link is a very long read so we are doing it step by step. I am going to check the shifter also to see if it is "sloppy" and i will let you know how things go.
Thanks for the help everyone
