Default 1992 240 Auto Tranny Question

I have a 1992 240 wagon with an automatic transmission and 185k miles which I've owned for about a year. Starting about 4 months ago it would slip a little between 2nd and third. I checked the fluid and it was a bit (2/3 qt) low. It didn't really help, but it wasn't too bad.

My wife says it has been getting worse recently, especially when it is hot after she's been on the highway for a while. It doesn't slip while in gear, only when shifting. You have to back-off the gas a little when it shifts and give it a second or two.

Question:

Will changing the filter and fluid likely help? It appears easy enough to do and the kits are $15 or so.

If worse comes to worse, how difficult is a rebuild? I see that the kits are about $100 or so. I'm not incredibly mechanical, but we have a second car so I could take my time.

Thanks in advance,

Mark

I would change (flush) the fluid. I would not mess with the pan or filter unless its leaking. Most importantly - don't mess with the nut on the side of the pan that holds the filler tube.

Agreed. I would not pull the pan unless absolutely necessary. Replace the fluid, Dex III is good, using the upper radiator cooling line. The procedure is online, post back if you can't find it.
