1992 940GL (B230FB) stalled when driving, but runs fine now a few days later
Hello fellow Volvo owners,
TL;DR: Help needed with determining cause of intermittent stalling engine. Fuel supply issue or ignition problem?
About a week ago, I was going on a trip with my 940GL. The first 30km the car was driving fine. I filled up at a gas station and noticed dirt in the opening of the tank. I tried removing it as best I could. But some of it was sitting right on top of the little valve at the bottom of the opening and some of it dropped into the tank. The volume of dirt was not more than the size of a walnut, probably less.
The car continued to drive normally until I got into town about 15km from the gas station. When accelerating the engine would stall, not delivering power intermittently. I briefly stopped on the side of the road when the engine stopped running completely. The engine would start and idle normally. Applying throttle everything appeared to be normal again. No stalling no misfiring. We drove on to our destination, just a few blocks down from where I stopped.
There the car sat for about three hours until we were continuing our journey. While leaving town driving wasn't smooth, but doable. When we got to the motorway and I tried to accelerate quickly in third gear, the engine wouldn't respond like it wasn't getting enough fuel. Remembering the dirt in the tank opening, I was suspecting fuel delivery issues. Albeit, I also thought that the fuel filter should prevent that, unless that gets clogged by too much dirt, of course.
I managed to pull into a gas station. The car wouldn't go faster than about 30km/h (personal perception, I didn't check) in third gear with full throttle. I called roadside service. There was a bit of water at the distributor cap. It was taken off, cleaned and refitted, but didn't help. The mechanic also tapped the fuel pump motor with a rubber mallet, but engine idle speed wouldn't improve. At times the engine would even stop right after cranking like fuel was not being supplied.
Eventually the car was towed away. Four days later it was towed to the shop and, low and behold, it would start and drive no stalling. The shop checked if the issue would return when the engine was fully warmed up, but it kept running fine. Shop owners suggestion is to replace the ignition coil and/or the ignition coil power stage (Bosch EZ 116 K). I'm thinking of checking/replacing the fuel filter. But I'm no expert. I do have the Haynes manual for the car. I checked the OBD read outs. Ignition system (socket 6) was okay: 1-1-1. The fuel system had two fault codes: 1-2-1 (MAF sensor signal) and 1-1-3 (fuel mixture too lean/rich). Both of them I suspect are remnants of the roadside check. The air filter was taken off with the engine running and some starter spray used in the air inlet hose. After clearing all errors and starting the engine, no faults were logged. I didn't drive the car after resetting the OBD.
What would you suggest as possible causes? What else could I try to narrow down possible culprits?
