Default 1992 automatic transmission question

My '92 245 transmission is not working. So I dropped the tranny pan to change the filter and see what was in the bottom of the pan. I am hoping the filter was just too plugged and servicing will get the old car back on the road. I don't really want bigger transmission problems. I did find metal shavings on the T-pan magnet. Uhggg!

This is the first time I have serviced any automatic transmission. So I do not know how to interpret what I found in the T-pan. I am guessing there will be some metal in there but I am not sure if what I found is "a lot" or "normal" or "not bad for a '92 daily driver".

Could someone with more knowledge and experience take look at the picture I have posted and give me some feedback or share their opinion? Thanks for the help.

that picture is the size of a postage stamp and impossible to tell what ...

fwiw, there is not actually a 'filter' in these transmissions, just a screen.

what are your symptoms? 'not working' is rather ambiguous. is it staying in first gear? is it permanently in neutral or park?

Pierce, thank you for pointing out that my original description was to vague. Sorry about that.

After starting the car and slipping the shifter it into reverse, or drive, the transmission just spins like it is in neutral. Prior to this happening the transmission would need to wind up the rpms pretty high before it would then kick down into third gear from second. Beyond these problem I cannot tell you much more, the car is my sons and was his daily driver until the transmission failed.

It seems to me that due to the age of this car the amount of metal on the magnet does not seem to be that much. I am pretty sure that this car did not receive regular maintenance prior to my son buying it.

I have no idea when or if this cars transmission has been flushed (if ever). I know the pan has been drained at least once because the threads on the drain plug have been damaged– but can still be snugged up and do not leak when tightened.

I will post better picture later this evening.

at this point, your best bet is finding a 240/740/940 at a wreckers (or being parted out on CL or whatever), ideally 1989+, and getting its transmission and swapping it in. the 7/9 turbos have a sturdier version AW71. The DOHC 740 '16v' sometimes GLE, had a differently geared AW72 which you probably wouldn't like (requires higher revving).

a pre-1989 won't have the CPS notches on the flexiplate, you could still use the transmission if you swap flexiplates, you'd also need to make a hole for the CPS on the edge of the bell housing.
