Hey my 1993 volvo 940's transmission has been acting up and im not sure what it is. When driving it often times will not shift from first gear...no matter how high i rev it. Ill accelerate but it will not shift, ill lay off the gas and let my revolutions die down and then give it some more gas, but it still will not shift...any ideas?

 

Hi Big Mike, welcome to the site.

Does it slip? If not, you may have a problem with your PNP switch. Try shifting to 3rd or 2nd (not sure what's under D) and see how it acts then. Also, if you have a W (winter mode) try that. Check fluid levels ASAP.

Your tranny is going out... The PNP switch is not related to shifting, it just prevents the car from starting if not in P or N... Most likely the valve body is bad, and it takes internal tranny work to fix...

 

How many miles on the car. When was the last time the fluid was changed. I would consider changing the fluid and filter and check it for debris. Flush the system with new fluid and then fill it up. See haw it reacts and if your problem goes away then OK if not then you will need transmission work. My 2 cents
