240 odometer, amazing, hilarious discovery.
howdy . i thought i'd share something i discovered about the 1989 240 gl i bought 5 years ago . some of you may have encountered this, but it's a discovery that has made me very happy.
when i purchased it in 2012 the odometer was stuck at 211k. a broken odometer is no big deal to me and the rest of the car.. well. it was, aside from cobwebs and dry belts, etc. very clean for a car with such "high milage"
but then ... i noticed something one day a couple years after i bought it , the odometer started moving...(note that i said "moving " and not "working" ) i shrugged it off because it stopped doing it after a few miles/days, and since i dont pay any attention to the odometer because it's broken it took me awhile to notice something very unusual. the odometer reading read 50k more miles than it did when i bought the car, LOL . i know for a fact i didnt drive 50k miles in this much time. and besides most of the time the odometer doesnt turn at all. LOL
so yesterday i noticed it was moving again and i watched it . it was at about 260 k. in the space of a half mile it read that i'd driven about 11 miles !!!
it get's wierder. this morning it was at 265k i drove about 6 miles to the swap meet and back it now reads 273k
..
this means one of the following is happening
1. i manage to drive the car into a magic portal that transports me to far away places and back with out my noticing
2. my car travels at much faster speeds than allowed by physics and the spedometer is broken and not the odometer
3. OR..... the malfunction in the odometer has caused it to show much much higher mileage than the car actually has. this would explain how clean it seemed.
anyhow, what this tells me makes me pretty giddy. the car definately has far fewer miles on it than the odometer shows now, and MOST LIKELY has since i had it ..i mean, who knows when the odometer broke? 100k? 80k? 50? .. i've looked all over for similar stories and i cant find one .. anyone encounter this?
