Default 240 wont start

Hello All,
My trusty 1989 240dl wont start. Its getting spark and cranks and sometimes sputters like it wants to start but just wont. So it seemed like a fuel problem. I have checked all fuses, both pumps are running, replaced fuel filter, fuel relay, and fuel pump sock from in tank. I'm nervous about messing with injectors for fear of doing more expensive damage.(rusted fuel line in fuel pump assembly broke when I removed it, cost $60 to braise back together., and still seeps a little) Car ran a little sluggish prior but was running well enough. Any help or ideas who be greatly appreciated . Also any possibilities on a used fuel pump assembly, the best price on a new one I found was $150. Thank you in advance, I am nervous about an expensive trip to an unknown mechanic. These forums have proven very valuable in the past for me.

Are ya sure its a 89 240 Dl, autozone only shows 244 and 245DL for 89.
Supposedly they use 2 pumps.

I don'thave adeisel but have you pulled the codes yet?
What about the injector relay?

Volvo actually gave up the 244 245 designation back in the early 80's.
They called them 240's after that.
Also they stopped deisel engines in the mid 80's.

89volvo240dl You will have to have the fuel pressure checked and also if you have injector pulse.

Thanks for the help. I attempted to check codes and fuel codes came back 1-1-1, not sure if there is more I can check, the code thingy is very new to me. Any idea where the injector relay is? IS checking the fuel pressure and injector pulsesomething I can do? I will look in service manual but any further info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again

IS therea relay on the coolant overflow bottle bracket?
If theres 2 relays and they're identical you can swap them, one is probably the injector relay.
But I've never looked at deisels so maybe they are located elsewhere.

There is a speed sensor mounted on the back of the engine. That controls injector pulse. You will need a noid light to test for pulse. Fuel pressure you would need a guage with an adapter to connect.

The 25amp fuse under the hoodlooked fine but after switching with a different one she finally started up!!!Not sure if a combination of new fuel pump relay, new filter and new filter sock were contributing factors but I now know alot about the fuel sytem and have done some good maintenance. I'm back on the road. Thanks so much for all of your help with this. This forum proves again an essential tool in my toolbox. Cheers

does it seem not to start when foggy/mist out? Mine does that. 89 240 dl. I take the dist. cap and spark plug wires off. throw em in the oven for about 10 mins. Put em back on and starts right up. Basically I need a seal and new wires. But that works for now. Hope it helps in a jam.

I've seen spraying the wires with WD40 get many balky engines to fire up when its very damp out.
