244 Diesel

244 Diesel
Reference 1984 244 Diesel.
Problem: Exhaust fumes.
Recently the exhaust system was replaced with an original Volvo system, complete with all new seals and clamps. Presently there are indications of possible exhaust fumes entering the cabin. It is especially noticeable when the heat is on. All tubes from the diesel fuel pump appear to be leak free. The motor does not have any exterior diesel or oil leaks. Suggestions are welcome.

RE: 244 Diesel
Update:
The fumes originated from fuel leaking from the diesel fuel injector pump. If possible, I'd like to
replace any gaskets while in place. If not, then I'll have to remove the pump, replace the gaskets
and reinstall it. For the reinstallation I'll have to get more information.

RE: 244 Diesel
You could try getting a buddy to block off the exhaust exit, preferrably outside and starting with a well cooled engine while you listen for leaks. Before it gets too hot you could even pour a soapy water mixture over the connecting points throughout the exhaust to red flag those leaks. Causing a buildup of pressure would make the gas exit at the point of least resistance which would facilitate finding the suspected leak(s). Simply have him put his hand over the muffler and hold it there. Common sense would have him release his hand when the pressure builds up too much or the exhaust gets too hot. Never pour cold water over a hot exhaust pipe. That should be done before the point where the pipe gets too hot to touch.

I don't know wheather it is a rotary or inline pump. I will be photographing it and posting it.
The exhaust system-from the manifold to the end does not show any leaks. I retorqued all the clamps. The problem appears to be a slight leak at the the injection pump - a Bosch unit.
Today I washed down the pump and the connecting fittings hoping to see the actual source of the
leak.
