Default 740 acceleration problem

Hello, I am new to this forum but have been a volvo owner for years. I have a stange problem wih my 88 - 740. It will on every so often de-accelerate as I am driving. I will be on the expressway and driving along at about 110 to 120 Km/h when all of a sudden the rpm gauge starts bouncing around and the car starts to de-accelerate or even sometimes stall. As soon as it starts I need to pull over before it dies. I have had it in to the machanincs who can't find the problem.

There is an engine speed sensor located at the back of the block. It controls fuel and spark.
