740 estate tow bar wiring
Hi, I'm new here and have just bought my first proper Volvo, a 1989 740 2l turbo estate - love it as much as I hated the V70 diesel I had as a company car three years ago.
So, the car has a tow bar, and under the load area is a multi wire connector which I am sure is for the tow bar wiring. Is this connector standard Volvo, and can I buy a lead to fit to it, or is it a diy job from here.
Any help appreciated.
Tony

There is a multi-plug for the towbar wiring and a lead is available from Volvo, for much money. I have always done my own connections, with the help of a multi-meter or test light, for not much money.
Hi Tony,
I recently had to fix the trailer wiring in my old Nissan truck. I went to this site http://www.accessconnect.com/trailer_wiring_diagram.htm which was a huge help for me, hope it helps you too!! Good luck.

Thanks guys
I'm doing to DIY.
Because of concerns over the bulb failure warning circuit I've bought a 7 way smart relay, so theres no risk.
Nice though to find grommets underneath with profiled holes for the cable to run through!

Trouble is that someone has taken some feeds from the lights to the multiplug.
Doesn't look cpompletely stock. Anyway tis now nearly done!
Thanks again.
On a separate issue I went to the Volvo dealer today who can find no service history for the car. I know that there has been work done on it becausae the aircon has a Volvo upgrade to R134a gas.
Is it usual not to be able to find history for a 1989 car?

Sorry Tony but I don't have that info available to me at this time. I'm able to get wiring diagrams where I work but I'm home for a few weeks recovering from knee surgery. I bet if tech sees this message, he'll be able to help you out a lot quicker than several weeks.....Oh, and I have one request if you would be so kind. While you're wiring this up, would you take some pics and post them here or send them to me in e-mail Please? I'm in the process of ordering an OEM hitch and wiring kit for my 91 240 and would much appreciate some pics or maybe a detailed explanation as to how to wire it up.
Thanks Tony,
Dale

Solved.
Have now got it working via a relay.
Will post pictures and pinouts later.
One nigle is that the sidelights on the trailer do not go out when the ignition is turned off and the switch left in the side light position. My car's side lights go out when ignition is turned off - but the trailer ones do not. You may want ot fit a buzzer to warn of this off of the towing circuit
