740 General Stereo Question
Bought a 91 740 wagon. There's no radio installed. I am thinking to use www.car-parts.com to find the correct replacement (Used) radio/cassette whatever. If the car came with a cassette will a CD equipped head work? Are these radio's theft coded? How do I get the code if the vendor doesn't know it? I had a V70 prior to this car and got lucky, the code was written on the radio. I may well do an upgrade head through Crutchfield but might try a cheap replacement for now.
Thanks Much.

Good site....Check there or just stop by a local junkyard....
I would just go aftermarket with the headunit....only problem is the slot for the radio is bigger than a single DIN and I believe slightly smaller. I just use a small towel to hold up my headunit. use the stock wire harness to slipce into or make a connect to fit in the stock unit connector.

Stock radios for the '91 were coded, but the codes can still be had from a Volvo dealer for free. But you need to have the VIN of the car where the radio was originally installed. So, if you get a used one, you will need to know the VIN of the car. Junkyards have these radios (cassettes) and are cheap, especially in the PullYourOwn types. I just got one for $10. As far as replacement, there is an ADAPTER KIT that must be used for a good fit. Stereo shops have them... around $10.
