could the cold start injector be stuck on? that would definitely squirt too much fuel into the system.

I don't know, Pierce, but that's an idea I hadn't thought about. Time to hit the Haynes manual and find out about the cold start injector. :-)

hmmm. which engine on that 84 240? is that the b23f ? i'm not seeing a cold start injector on my parts diagrams, of course, I've just taken a quick look and easily could have missed it.

that fuse you perplaced is a common problem i had. There is a large vacuum hose which likes to crack/come loose during engine repair which is under the intake manifold going to the block? check it, will cause probs engine dieing. i also had the same idle prob until i adjusted the throttle position sensor using the procedure in my lil' hanes manual. it now idles like a champ.

OK, i took apart the fuel injectors and cleaned em and cleaned every single contact i could find. Now it wont start. The engine just floods. I can pull the spark plugs and clean them, but when i reinstall em, it runs for about 10 seconds and stalls. Every time after that, the motor runs for about 2 seconds and shuts down. Will not respond to throttle or anything. Any suggestions?

too much fuel. if the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator is leaking or disconnected, there will be too much fuel at idle, which could do what you just described (run a few seconds then foul the plugs)

I replaced the vacuum line when I replaced the FPR. Thanks for the suggestion though. Is this something that would happen if the timing belt may have slipped?

when you say, "I took apart the fuel injectors and cleaned them", what exactly did you disassemble, and how did you clean them? this is the last thing you did, and after doing that, your car is flooding itself....

Well, it was flooding before that. I was thinking maybe the o-rings may have been an issue, but once I took the injectors out, I realized that wouldn't necesarily make the engine flood out. I took them out of the fuel rail and intake and soaked them for a few hours in sea foam, swirled them around a little, put new o-rings on and reinstalled. I was careful not to soak deep enough to get into the electrical connections.

I don't think it has a cold start injector.

I also noticed that the flame trap thingy fits kinda loosely where it attaches to the engine. This may be something I have to look further into, but I don't think its causing my current biggest issue.

Sooo...I charged the battery, took the spark plugs out and cleaned them (again) turned it over a few times to clear the cylinders of unspent fuel with the plugs out, reinstalled the plugs and it fired up. It rev's fairly well, but still has a miss and surging idle and will occasionally backfire after revving. I'll try Tony's suggestion of adjusting the throttle position sensor and hope that helps, but I still dont think that's gonna fix the miss. Heck IDK. Feel like I'm banging my head against a brick wall.

one redneck thing you might try is purposely causing a fault so that it begins running in "limp-a-long" mode which i believe is when the "controller" ignores all sensors and runs with as if the sensors are all sending a default signal or something like that. i believe disconnecting the oxygen sensor should suffice although i haven't actually tried that , it's probably the simplest way to cause a code. if the check engine light comes on and soon after the engine runs well, you would at least know that the injectors are fine as well as many other possible causes.

I don't believe an 84 has a Check Engine Light or much in the way of codes. not sure the LH2.2 system even has limp home mode, its got a much simpler processor and program than the later LH2.4 has.

I know it has an o2 sensor light. Its not on, but does come on when I cycle the ignition. It doesn't have the box with the diagnostic lights like some newer ones have. It revs fairly well without being under load (in park or nuetral) but nearly dies when reved if put in gear.

ok my bad on the OBD thing. being how old it is. You know, I bought a 79 volvo for next to nothing because it died under load and it turned out to be that large vacuum hose under the intake manifold had popped off at one end. i dont remember where it went to and my hand was never the same after reattaching it due to having to bend every bone to do it, but it was around a 3/4" inch pre-formed "L" shaped hose.

Tony - Are you referring to the hose that goes to the flame trap or is there another one that I may be missing? Thanks

I was able to get it running well enough to drive around my neighborhood. It needs so much still done and I Don't have the time to keep putting into it. Sucked it up and bought a clean used s60. Now what to do with this old thing...Sell - ebay for project car or craigslist for project car? Donate for tax write off?
