fuel pressure regulator plug?? the fuel pressure regulator is purely a mechanical device, it has no electrical connection.

the two threaded connections are for the fuel in and out, and the thin tube is for a vacuum hose.

That 29 year old car will probably last longer than the cars that are only 10 years old! Think about it, if the classic volvos (prior to 1993 when they were still real volvos and made in Sweden) are known to attain and exceed 1,000,000 miles (look for your own proof on volvoclub.org), how many "regular" cars would you have to buy to reach 1million miles? probably about 4 now multiply that times say 15k you would have to spend 60k to reach 1 million miles with other cars than the one that she just bought! My 89 volvo drives and runs better especially on the interstate going 80-85mph than my 2005 model truck! I'd rather drive to alaska in my 89 volvo than my 2005!!

It is still a Volvo 240. The 244 is just Volvo speak for a 4 door sedan. It used to be that Volvo referred to the cars in the 200 series as followed

242-Volvo 240 coupe
244-Volvo 240 4 door sedan
245- Volvo 5 door wagon

Hang in there at least you are learning about your car. However the 740 is a nice car too. If you like that boxy style and you cannot find a good 740, look at the 93-95 940 as it is almost the same and if you opt for the wagon it looks the same

Good luck

You guys are great thanks for the support!!! I have a couple of family members who kinda gave me a rash over this car...lol. BUT given the amount of time I spend doing research & discovery
(ie:when my daughter and I went and started cleaning the MAF to see if that would work... I think some people thought I lost my mind) along side the wealth of information they are learning via me ... (they being the chevy/bmw people) are definatley getting on board with a new found respect for my VOLVO world! And who wouldnt't?

BUT I love my 240. Just love it. I wont be getting rid of it. Its a beautiful cream color i could just go on and on but...I will post pics when I figure my phone out in the mean time Im working on saving its life... I know I will.

I saw the 740. Not me. I like the style I have. In anycase I have another car to drive and my 240 is my project.
I know that part you just show me and that is what it is called...but that is not the part I am referring to is ....per the fuel injection schematic: Fuel pump relay white color, replaces older relay 134760324085-93SC3523608
Ahhhh... its the RELAY. Sorry if I said that wrong prior. It is on the passenger side under the floor board. The wire goes from the battery to the ignition to the fuel pump relay then to it looks like the computer(s). I cannot tell if the grounding issue stopped at the relay or carried on down the line. I thought there might be some other fuse past the relay....or should I be looking for a new fuel injection computer?

Hi barbra ann, glad you love the old volvos! They will most likely outlast even alot of new cars of today. For starters, which this is something i do almost every tank of gas, add some mystery marvel oil (only about 3-4 ounces to a whole tank, or add some lucas fuel treatment to the fuel when you fill the tank up. Add it before the gas. This should help and if not it will still be very good for it. I had a 1983 volvo 240 that the previous owners never did this and after i bought it and added these fuel additives it made the 83 run much smoother and restored ALOT of power!! So much I noticed a huge difference after this was done. Please let me know if this helps.

they were right about the octane rating, you dont have to put the 91 octane in this car. And especially when you add these fuel additives, just apply the 87 octane with the additive, the money you are saving on the 87 as opposed to the 91 you will be saving and the fuel additive will pay for itself! the only thing is a tank of 87 octane with 4 ounces of mystery marvel oil is much better than an entire tank of 91 octane without it. Oh but by the way, dont put stp fuel treatment or anyother type of similiar fuel treatment in your volvo you will be wasting your money. The mystery marvel oil or lucas is night and day difference better! Also it will help prevent your fuel lines from freezing in the winter, especially the mystery marvel oil!! Good luck!!

When I had my 740, I kept track of the mileage all the time. 91 Octane did nothing for that car, I pumped 87 almost all the time. I would use Lucas fuel treatment about once every 10,000 miles, I use it now every 2,500. Fuel freezes at such a low temp I don't think that matters unless you are seeing temps of under 20 below zero F.

My 740 had over 400,000 miles and was in excellent shape. I'm sure it would have had over 600,000 on it had I kept it. There was times that I would put almost 5,000 miles on it in a week. No matter what I did it got about 24 mpg.

our 240 is also perfectly happy on 87 octane regular. we do tend to use brand name gas stations (Chevron, etc). I've hardly ever used any sort of gasoline additive in it, we've owned it since new. the odometer stopped working at 250000 miles in 1996 or 97, the car probably has 400,000 miles now. only stuff thats needed doing other than scheduled maintenance, one new alternator, one transmission rebuild, a new radiator, and suspension bushings in the back. oh, and the fuel pump wore out last year. ok, the camshaft oil seal let go last year too.

Great info! I have est. I got around 20ish/24 miles per gal. I use STP once...nothing. I have used Lucas...good stuff. I have nerver heard of mystery marvel. Looking forward to trying it.
In stumped with the relay issue. I found a white relay and plugged it into both of the connected on the passengers side. The one makes the fuel pump go on and it is loud. I heard the buzzing befor but not this loud nor this long. The bottom plug is supposed to be for the overdrive yet in another text it says it is for the fuel pump.
I do know that it was fried. So the end result could have been frying the end at the wire...
I believe that maybe when it says computer on the sheet it could be the ECU that was affected.
Up until then...it turned over and it drove.
Since my fatal ground ....it doesnt turn over.
Any in put?

marvel mystery oil is snake oil. but then so are most all those additives. don't add anything to your oil, you're jsut wasting money. these cars like 10W30 oil for almost all temperature ranges the fuel injection cleaners like techron, seafoam do an ok job cleaning certain sorts of oily crud out of the injector nozzles, but if the nozzles are really crusted up, all that works is taking them out of the car and putting them through an ultrasonic cleaner, and even that can be dubious.

on my 240, the EFI/fuelpump relay is rectangular and has 6 flat pins in 2 rows. its actually got two relays inside, one powers the ECU (fuel injection controller) and the other powers the fuel pumps. yours is a earlier version, I'd have to check the wiring diagrams to verify how it works.

ah. on the 84, its 2 separate relays for the ECU and for the fuel pumps, both 4 pin, and both the same kind. both relays are somewhere around the glove box. the overdrive relay is /completely/ different type with 5 pins, NOT interchangeable, and appears to be tucked in behind the upper center console.

my daughter's 87 240 has been having erratic idle and stalling problems, generally worse on cold wet mornings, and I think I've tracked it down to her fuel pump relay and/or the wiring. the proble is, of course, when *I* look at it, it runs fine. hah.

Love the seafoam. Really good stuff.
The ECU and the relays, that entire area... Im going to look into that in Saturday.
Im worried about th grounding issue. But Thank you for the info.
I had the weird idle problem...it was drving me crazy but did really interfere with proformance. No stalling though. I change the idle control valve and nothing changed. So I put the original back in...BUT when I cleaned the MAF...seemed to stop doing that. But then again...other stuff took place. Is that one of those mystery illnesses with our car? (haha)

the single most common problem is, in my humble opinion, a broken odometer.
