Hello VolvoForums!

The Service Engine Soon light is on in my 1987 Volvo 740GLE. How do I check the codes? All the info I find only applies to 91 and later OBD1. After I check the codes, how to I reset them? Thanks in advance!

 

1987? that is before volvo had cel. If you mean service reminder light the reset is on the back of the speedometer and it is difficult to reach with my paws.

So thats not actually a CEL? Awesome.

Back of the speedometer? Do I have to remove the dash? How do I get to it?

 

The reset buton is behind the right centre of the instrument panel and, unless your hands are too big like wojeepster's, you should be able to press it without taking out the instrument panel. Remove the trim panel under the driver's side of the dash and go underneath with a hand lamp to find it.

As a matter of interest the on-board diagnostic unit was first introduced to Volvos in 1989, along with the CEL. In 1995/6 it changed to OBD11 for which you need a scanner.
