'89 240DL - Horn, High Beams, Speedometer problems
Hi all,
I've been having some problems as of late with my '89 240. It all started on night while coming home from a long camping trip. I was in the car, when the Speedometer began dipping down from my cruising speed of 60 MPH, to 0, and then back again. It was odd to say the least, and I gave the dashboard above the steering wheel a little thump, and it righted itself. This kept up for a week or two, and I noticed that when the speedometer cut out, so did the horn, high beams, and odometer. Well, at this point, they're all totally gone. None of the fuses are blown, and the battery has no problem charging, and the car has no problems starting, which I think rules out the voltage regulator.
In my explorations to see if I could coax it into working again, I fiddled through all of the ignition key positions. I found that if you position the key to just a smidgen before you give juice to the starter, the speedometer flicks up to 40MPH, and the odometer starts rolling up. I pulled off the steering column cover to see if any of the connections were loose, and everything is clean, and nice looking. All of the connections were solid.
Anyway, I had picked up a Haynes manual when I bought the car, and I was reading up on the circuit diagrams, and I think I've narrowed the problem down to the Ignition Switch. I just don't want to make a purchase before I'm totally sure of myself (money is tight). Anyway, I figured I'd ask you guys, and see what you think.
Edit: I did do a search for problems like this before posting, but I didn't find anything.
