Gremlins..... I ran the codes like you said. I got 1-4-4, which first indication is bad injector relay. So, even though earlier I had slightly loosened the input at the rail to see if there was pressure (yes, I know, it's not smart), I discovered there was plenty of fuel there, so no reason to snuspect bad relay, right????? Just for kicks I switched it out and what do you know....it cranked right up. Like I said; Gremlins... Now onto the leaky sunroof...or will it be the loping idle on the wagon? (already cleaned the throttle body & IAC)

 

On my 89 740 NA the RSR is on the coolant tank. As I mentioned I always carry a new FPR , RSR and CPS as after 376K miles usually one of these will fail and leave you stranded.

 

I guess I assumed the pump relay was good because I had pressure at the rail. But now I realize it could work in "On" position but not "Start" position. Thankfully, I have a handful of those laying around, so... Thanks, Pierce, for all the excellent guidance. I'm curious: What was your favorite Volvo?

 

I really liked my wife's 93 960 wagon. also my 1989 Volvo 780 Bertone that I bought new but only owned for 6 months (was totalled in an accident) Also liked my 1992 740 T wagon.

 

More Gremlins. Today I could not get it to start. I'm starting to think maybe weak pump or old gas? Anyway, ran the code function, it indicated bad relay again, so I pulled the tray, removed the pump relay and put a jumper in there; could hear the fuel pump running but it would not start. I eventually tried testing an injector as described by Pierce but somehow managed to create a spark in the process. Anyway I finally got it to start by pumping the gas pedal like you used to on a carbed vehicle. It started up making an awful racket and then settled into a purr. Only problem is: now when I tun on my headlights it's like I hit a kill switch and the car dies. The only other clue is when I turn on the headlights, the indicator for the right blinker is visible; not fully lit as when activated, just dimly lit. What have I done now?

 

I'm not sure but I thought the 90 cars have the Regina system where there is only 1 fuel pump and it is located in the gas tank. Also the coil is different from the 89 cars that have the Bosch system. which one do you have.

 

This is an '89 with a Bosch system. I have a '90 w/ Regina, but this is not it.

 

not all 90's are regina, afaik all california cars are bosch, for instance.
