'90 740 Car Loses Power after going 70-80mph
After experiencing the fuel gauge problem and posting about it in a previous post, I now have a problem where my car will lose battery power and not get any fuel after driving at 70-80mph and slowing down. I just got off the highway when I put my car it park and ran inside a store to get something, leaving the car on. Then when I try to drive off, the car is having a hard time getting gas then eventually dies completely. After trying to turn it on the car doesn't even click. Thought it might be the fuel relay, but it's a good relay that was replaced in 2015. Any ideas as to what my problem could be? Also, once the car gets a jump start it starts up no problem.
did you test the battery/alternator (quick test is to measure voltages at the battery using a multi-meter) and inspect cables/clean the terminals. ?? what happens when you jumper the fuel pump relay? Note that an old fuel pump can draw too much current and will fry even a newer relay. Check out volvotips.com to see if they have any references for fuel pump testing. Also try wiggling the key when it fails to turn over (on the possibility you have a wonky ignition switch.)
