90' 940 GLE electrical problem
Hi all, my first post here =)
I'm the proud owner of a 90' 940 GLE 2.3i. Everything was running fine til yesterday, when I noticed that whenever I turn on the high beams or front backup lights the wipers start working automatically. I checked the lights from outside with the following results:
- The low beams works ok on its own.
- The wipers works ok on its own, I checked all the wipers functions.
- When I turn on the front backup lights, the wipers start working, no matter if the wipers switch is turned on, turned off, etc.
- When I turn on the high beams, the wipers start working, no matter if the wipers switch is turned on, turned off, etc.
- When both low beams and backup lights are on, the wipers start working and I loose some lights on the left side.
- When both low beams and high beams are on, the wipers start working and I loose some lights on the left side.
Any experience with something as weird as this? I think there's a lost ground somewhere but I dunno where to check first. Any ideas?
Excuse my bad english and thanks in advance

That is very weird.
I would check the wiring in the steering column first then back track and try to find the Grounds.

See if those wiring Diagrams will help you.

Checked today and it's not happening anymore. I've had the problem for 3 days. It's been raining a lot and probably some water got into the wrong place. Gonna check the wiring diagrams anyway.
Thanks a lot Tech =)

found this old thread.
my 92 940 has the exact same problem but also started with heater fan fail and no indicators for a short while until i restared the car.
2 days later i have the same main beam and front fogs with the front and rear wipers all coming on with the lights.
did anyone ever find the answer/.
any ideas would be great. many thanks all.
Update.
Problem solved.
Just inside the inner wing above the washer bottle there is an earthing block with just one single spade connector attached.
Pulled it off and on and jiggled it a bit to make sure of proper contact and everything is back to normal.
No more random wipers or lights going out when using main beam or fogs.
A new problem then started but was completely unrelated, I think.
Starter motor would work but was not engaging fully so would do a double tooth crunch whilst trying to start.
Sticky or lazy solenoid, so replaced with new NAPA starter for less than £80,
Will get old one refurbished soon and keep as spare.
