Default 91 240 rough idle CEL on

91 s40 s/w. It starts right up, then the idle slows down and stumbles, it won't usually die, but does occasionally. Doesn't seem to matter if the engine in cold or hot. Plus, the service soon light comes on as it starts, then goes out 2-3 minutes later. The 'check engine light' routine occurs every time the engine it started and the light never comes back on once it goes out unless the engine is restarted. I've checked the vacuum lines and found no breaks, splits or looses hoses; checked the plugs, gap was .040" to .045" and they were nice thin ash colored, no soot or oil whatsoever. I'm guessing there is a faulty sensor or sending unit, but don't have any way to check codes, if it would even have any. Any ideas? what direction to go? I think I need to swap plugs, wires, cap and rotor, but that wouldn't leave the service light on.

Thanks
dave

Thanks, bubba240, that link is a gold mine of info. I tried to search around a little on that forum, all I get is error messages; is that me or is their site messed up?

Thanks
dave

I have tried the brickboard site, I can visit it but it won't let me sign in. The admin does not return email or email my password. Any one here know the admin on brickboard? The site in a goldmine of info, but I cannot post there until I can sign on.
