Default 93 240 wagon temperature gauge gremilings

The temperature gauge on my 93 240 wagon is acting up, the needle moves all the way down when cruising, and goes up to about 1/4 when driving and at times moves to the 9'o clock position. I read something on IPD site that they sell instructions on how to correct and bypass the system to read it precisely. Also they mention it could be the thermo sensor. Does anyone here encountered the same problem before, how did you fixed it? or does anyone have the information on how to bypass the readings and make it read precisely. Thanks.

the stock temp gauge in the dash has a 'flat spot' on it so it reads dead center if the temp is anywhere near the normal range, this was done to prevent people from freaking out when it moved back and forth over the middle third of its range due to ambient driving conditions.. On most 240s, this was done via a little sliver of a circuit board htat plugged into the back of the instrument panel, and IPD's kit replaces that little board with a jumper. I believe the last couple year 240s integrated this function into the main panel so its harder to modify, and no, I don't know the exact mod.

the temp sensor used by the gauge is separate from the one used by the EFI and ignition control units. its one of several sensors stuck into the head just under the intake manifold, the others being the ECU+ICU temp sensor, and the anti-knock sensor. The ECU+ICU temp sensor has two blue-red wires, the knock sensor has a black and a green wire 'on its side' (and is a bit lower, on the side of the block), and the temp gauge sensor has 1 yellow wire out of the end.

Yeah, I have bypassed it before. Probably not the temperature sensor on the engine that is at fault. Checkout my guide...

the wiring TO the temp sensor is a frequent source of problems, especially in 83-87 cars with the biodegradable harnesses. (yes, I know, the OP's is a 93).

Alright, I knew someone had done this before, I was amazed to see that this problem is common and no aftermarket circuit boards are available online. It looks like the bypass is an easy thing to do. I'll be doing it asap. thanks dudes. Hey Pierce! let me ask you; do you play bass for a band called Primus? lol
