Default 93 940 Turbo -- Highway speed RPMs

I am looking to purchase a 93 940 Turbo with 156k miles.

How many RPMs should the engine turn at highway speeds (60-70mph)? When I test drove the vehicle it was turning between 3.5-4k. This seems high, but is it normal?

Also is it normal to press the "little button" at the bottom of the gear shifter to take the transmission out of park? I am not referring to the trigger button on the shifter itself.

Generally speaking how expensive are repairs for the turbo on this model?

Thanks!

I'm not sure what the exact rpm is at 70 but I can tell you that's too high and no it's not normal to have to depress the shift interlock bypass to change gears. I'm nota 940 expert but I can tell you it needs a new shift interlock switch and it also sounds like the overdrive is not engaging thus lowering the cruise rpm's. Be WARY of that one until you know exactly what is wrong with it or at the very least take it for another test drive and watch to see if the transmission is shifting into overdrive. It can't be with rpm's like that at 70 mph. You should be around 2500+ at that speed. On the 240's there's an overdrive solenoid that commonly fails that I believe is a simple not overly expensive thing to fix. On that 940, check with a 940 expert and see if it's a simple inexpensive item to replace. Hopefully one will chime in here and lead you in the right direction.

Thats what I thought on the RPMs.

What exactly is the "shift interlock bypass" button?

I am a little wary, but the price is only $800, and the car is not a primary vehicle for me.

Thanks!

The shift interlock unlocks the shifter when you step on the brake pedal to get the car out of park. In the case of the 940 that you're looking at, that switch is not working causing you to have to depress the bypass button near the shifter. The price certainly seems acceptable for the car as long as it isn't a rust bucket and the engine/turbo is healthy. Price out an overdrive switch solenoid along with an interlock switch. For $800, the car may very well be a good buy as long as it doesn't need a transmission and engine.

My 1991 940 Turbo does 3,000rpm at 70mph with a functional overdrive.

Default 94 940 turbo wagon

My 940 is at 263,000 miles and at 70-75 mph rpm's are around 2900-3200. Haven't had any issues and I can feel it shift, sometimes I let of gas a little when it hits 3000 rpm and it shifts then when I step on it.

This is a post from 2007, and yes, your RPMs seem OK...

My '93 Turbo was doing 3,000 rpm at 70 mph. They we're geared that way to keep the turbo in it's power range. The side effect was poor gas mileage, about 22 mpg and a buzzy, twitchy engine that definitely was not "cruising". So, I installed the axle and differential from a pre '95 960 wagon. The 940's had a 3:73 to 1 rear end and the 960's had a 3:31. Easy swap and my rpm's dropped to 2500 at 70 and my gas mileage went up to 26 mpg. If I need instant power just hit the overdrive button. As far as shifting, if moving the shifter back and forth(with or without the bypass switch pushed) feels clunky and restricted then it might be the 2 shift linkage bushings, which tend to wear out.

If the linkage is nice and smooth then it could be the brake pedal switch or a small micro switch next to the shifter that releases the shiftlock,
