93 volvo 940 turbo tranny.
that would be an AW71 transmission, and it has a drain plug but that only drains about 1/2 the ATF, the other half is in the torque converter, easiest to flush it out via the transmission cooler line at the radiator.
the 'filter' is a metal screen, if there's stuff in it, your tranny is on its way to imploding.
to flush a AW70/71 transmission I do something like this...
1) warm up the transmission thoroughly by taking the car for a 10-15 mile drive.
2) check the ATF level at the dipstick with engine idliing. if its not at the 'hot' high mark, see where it is.
3) park it and let it cool 20 mins or so, so its not scalding hot.
4) pull drain plug, let thoroughly drain into a clean container for several hours.
5) replace plug. measure what you drained out, and add that much new quality ATF via a CLEAN tranmission funnel into the dipstick tube.
6) disconnect top transmission cooler line fromt he radiator, attach a hose, put hose in clean clear jug that has quantities marked.
7) start engine and let idle. when a quart has come out, add another quart via the funnel. repeat this until the stuff coming out is completely clear red.
8) replace the tranmission cooler line. start engine, check that the ATF is up to the 'cold' mark, and add more if its not.
9) take for 10-12 mile drive, and check again while idling and hot, verify its at the 'hot' mark, if not add more.

The reason I ask is because i just bought the car and whoever filled tranny fluid overfilled it big time..Sometimes when i go to shift from park into drive i hear a mettalic noise from inside and outside underneath car.. Sometimes it doesnt do it,so I thought I would drain some fluid from it.
hmmm. if you have a 'topsider', I'd probably use that to suck the excess out the dipstick tube...
remember to only check the tranny dipstick when it is fully warmed up and the engine is idling. it typically takes 2-3 times as long to warm up the transmission as the engine.
