94 940 wagon turbo dies
HI!
I HAVE 94 940 TURBO WAGON, IT USED TO RUN FINE, NOW IT RUNS FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES AND DIES. COULD IT BE THE FUEL PUMP RELAY? I HAVE A 92 940 REGINA, IT USED TO DIE JUST BEFORE I REACHED WORK, I SHUT IT OFF FOR FIVE MINUTES AND I STARTED IT AGAIN. I CHANGED THE FUEL PUMP RELAY AND IT FIXED. COULD THIS BE THE SAME PROBLEM? IT SEEMS THAT THIS IS A WEAK POINT ON THE 940s ANY HELP WILL BE APPRECIATED. THANK YOU. HECTOR. |
well, it takes fuel, spark, and compression for an engine to run. its hard to guess which is dying.
one not uncommon problem from heat soak is the CPS, Crankshaft Position Sensor, going flakey when it gets hotter. |

the crank position sensor is behind the head, under the distributor, but a bit to the left side of the car, and sticks down into the bell housing of the transmission, right where the engine joins the bell housing. most frequent issues with it are disintegrating wiring

Do that test again, passes, start testing other things, fail replace. Mechanic's is not an exact science there's no 1 solution for a given symptom. it requires special tools and knowledge of operation of different systems. Testing and figuring out the problem through a system of elimination. Man, this forum is disturbing, maybe 3-4 guys give information and everyone else just asks for help and don't contribute any info. Forums used to be about posting diy's and information. Not dumb lazy DIY'ers that can't read or to cheap to buy a repair manual. Back in the day you learned to work on cars from repair manuals. |

guest01 is right, however, it could be most anything. a bad ECT, a fuel pump thats conking out when it gets warmer, wiring thats intermittent when hot, its impossible to say without doing a lot of tests and diagnostics. throwing random parts at it is NOT how you fix these things, as many new parts are WORSE than the ones that came on the car.

the CPS provides all the timing information, for both ignition and fuel injection. no CPS == no go.

I found the cps. It is hard to get to it. Do you think that if i remove the rotor and the distributor cap from the distributor, will it be any easier? i may be able to see what am i doing! Please advise. Thank you. Hector. |
Certainly on the 740/940 the distributer and cap gets in the way. Removal of the distributer cap will gain a bit more access.
How does the wire for the CPS look? Is the insulation flaking off? Usually, when the CPS fails, you will see cracked and flaking insulation from the wire. |

I don't know if it was flaking, but part of the black insulation was missing by the firewall end and by the sensor end. A white or light yellow wire was exposed. I did not see the actual metal wire. I will also change the fuel pump relay, to be on the safe side. Towing is so expensive. Thank you. Hector. |
hmm. according to my greenbook on 1994 940's, the CPS cable should have a red and blue twisted wire inside of a braided shield, thats surrounded by black insulation. although, mmm, its not altogether clear, maybe thats just the colors on the other side of the 3-pin connector at the firewall into the harness.

I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE TWISTED WIRES, BUT I BELIEVE THAT WHAT I CHANGED WAS THE CPS. MAYBE THE WHITE / LIGHT YELLOW THING WAS THE BRAIDED SHIELD THAT YOU MENTION. THERE WAS NOTHING ELSE ON the bell housing of the transmission. I CAN CUT THE WIRE OF THE OLD CPS TOMORROW TO FIND OUT! THE ITEM THAT I CHANGED WAS WERE YOU TOLD ME IT WILL BE. IT WAS HELD BY ONE SINGLE BOLT. HECTOR. |

on forums, all caps are considered shouting, and most frequently associated with AOL users of old. I'm guessing that red-blue+shield is on the other side of the connector, the drawing didn't actually label the colors of the wires between the sensor and the connector. |

Not to be repetative as I responded to another similar post but try unplugging your mass air flow and see if it stays running. If it doesn't it is your fuel pump relay if it does you have a faulty mass air sensor. Possibly.

about the upper case letters, i always use them because they are easy to see. after i post the message, the forum automatically change them to lower case. this time this did no happened. i think it is because i copy/pasted a portion of the message in lower case. hector. |
Lower case is actually easier to read, mixed case is best.
suggestion if you have vision problems, increase the font size in your webbrowser (ctl-+ in most browsers to zoom the whole page larger, repeat until happy). me, I wear bifocals :D |
