Default 940 A/C controls dead

I recently bought a 1994 940 sedan. The seller told me the a/c didn't work. SoI thought, okay just need to recharge the system, no problem-o... But I noticed I couldn't turn it on at all! The button doesn't do anything when I press it (it doesn't light up or anything). I started to get worried when I got the same result from the air recirculation button to the left (dead no light, no function). I feel they're both somehow related. I'm afraid to tear into the console w/o having an idea of what it could be. Is there anyone out there who can help?

I would say the controller is bad.
Some can be repaired and others can't.

What's a controller? (Is it the same as a relay?)

No it is the entire control assembly.
You will have to remobe the black trim around it then the 4 screws holding it in.
Then bend the 2 metal tabs and remove the controller.
