940 Overdrive Relay Info
Hello,
can anyone give me the "pin out" or circuit diagram of the Hella overdrive relay or tell me where to locate the information. I am trying to test the relay in my car before I buy a new one. When I press the switch on the gear column, the arrow lights up and the relay contacts open and close appropriately but I do not know if 12V isbeing fed to thesolenoid.

Pin out:-
87A Yellow/Red Overdrive indicator instrument cluster
87 Yellow Overdrive Solenoid
31 Blue Overdrive switch
Blue/Red Fuse #12
15 Black Connector #31/31 in fuse block
86 BrownOverdrive switch
6 Violet/WhiteSpeedo
8 Brown/WhiteDownshift inhibitor
orBlue/Black
The easiest way to test for 12v at the solenoid is to pull the plug from the solenoidand test there.

RE: 940 Overdrive Relay Info
Thanks a lot, Billof durham, as usual you have been a great help. I will try to get under the car this weekend to pull the plug and test there.
I had the relay out and I am pretty sure that it is ok. I applied 12V to pins 15 and 31 which energised the coil. Pins 87 and 87a then had 12V so I assume that now the problem must be either the wiring or the solenoid.
I tried to remove the tray which carries the relay so that I could check the wires there but, following the procedure given, ie, press the white clip back on the left side facing and lift the tray up in order to be able to pull it forward (towards the rear of the car, that is). Didn't seem to work and I didn't want to force it.
Regards

Going from memory, which is not as good as it used to be, I think you will find there is another clip on the right side.
If you find you have 12v at the plug on the solenoid this is how to test the solenoid itself:
