Default Air direction

my 89 240 dl wagon only blows through the floor and the vents. If you close all the vents and cover the floor vents w/ you hands it wil blow through the defrost but hard to drive that way..... Any thoughts???

try checking to make sure you have plenty of vacume to the controlls, if not i think they default to the floor and side vents at least thats what mine did.

The floor, defroster and recirc buttons are all vacuum controlled. There are 2 valves that control the floor vents. One is directly behind the glove box and the other is directly behind the instrument cluster (It can be accessed from beneth but the easiest way to get to it is to pop the instrument cluster out). they are easily removed because they are just pieces in the air ducts that snap onto the adjoining pieces on either side (Kind of hard to explain but if you just take a look you will see what i'm talking about). The valves for the defrosters are under the dash more towards the center but close to the floor valves. If they all are not working though my bet is that one of the vacuum hoses came undone. check those first. each valve should have a vacuum hose hooked to it. If those are all good then check the switches to see if there is a leak there. Good Luck.

Most systems default to the defrost for safety reasons. This one may or may not, I'm not sure.

Check the vacuum supply hoses in the engine compartment that go into the firewall, one may be split or broken.
