my 91 240 has been running fine but this morning it was hard to start. it turned over for a while then finally started but as soon as i hit the gas it would stall.

 

I recommendchecking the air mass meter located just behind the air filter housing. The symptom you describe is a classic air meter problem. If you know someone with a 240 that has the same air meter, try swapping theirs for yours, it takes just a few minutes to do. If your car starts, that's the problem. If you do have to replace the air meter, you can buy a rebuilt, which will cost $200-plus.
