bell housing
The only difference is how it handles 5th gear and OD as well as the gearing
for example the M47 is geared lower
That being said, the M47 is a rework of the M46, Flywheel is the same however I'm almost certain that the bell housing will not fit.

1989+ nonturbos and 1990+ turbos require a notch in the bell housing for the crank position sensor, and they require the flywheel be drilled for said crank sensor.
M47 is a native 5-speed, while M46 is a 4+OD. pretty sure they both use the same clutch, but the 4+OD will require the overdrive button on the shifter, plus OD relay behind the dash, plus all the associated harness.

OK, thanks, I have all the hardware. I was just concerned the M46 used a different clutch, flywheel and BH than the M47. I have an M46 here, as well as a M46 clutch, M47 flywheel and M47 BH. I wasn't sure if they will all fit together. The 1987 240 I want to put the M46 in has been converted to points and condenser ignition and a S.U carburettor so I don't need the pickup in the BH. When the automatic transmission dies I intend to install the M46.
oh, you know what else I bet is different is the drive shaft length. each combination had a different front shaft.
and as I said, for the M46, you'll need the OD relay, button, and harness, unless you plan to rig your own. On our TR-6, the OD switch was stalk on the left side of the steering wheel above the turn signal... up for OD, down for no OD. this switch was wired to a simple relay, and the relay powered the OD solenoid on the transmission.... the relay coil circult also went through the 'I'm not in 1st' switch on the TR6 gearbox, I think on the volvo, its a "I'm in 4th" switch.

you're absolutely correct different drive shaft length, but only if the B.H's and the total length of the two gearboxes are different.
If the M47 Bellhousing is dimensionally different that the M46 BH, I would also need a different gearshifter rod and gearshifter bracket. This is why I need to determine if the 2 BH's are the same. Knowing Volvo they probably are the same, but I like to know for sure before I start pulling things apart on the car.

ok, bell housing for a 1986 240 w/ the B230F engine and M46 transmission is part 3549350
bell housing for the same year 240 w/ the same b230f and a m47 is part.... 3549350
(this is according to Volvo's VADIS parts catalog, 2005 edition).
