I have an opportunity (?) to buy a 1992 740 for my son, BUT it has 200k miles. It is in good shape, absolutely no rust, runs well and very clean. I keep hearing how these are rock solid and "run forever". But....would you buy it? Any thoughts?

 

Buy it and make sure you service it well and it will most likely give you another 200,000 miles.

 

I just aquired a 91 740 with 230K and I have put another 20k and it runs incredible! The owner had it serviced by a volvo tech and it has all Volvo parts on it, even the oil filters where volvo.I know that this is the most important thing when buying any Volvo.Make sure that it has had a Volvo or Mann oil filter.This will be a good indication on how it was mantained and that the timing belt,trans,diff,brake fluid,etc have been serviced properly. I have a goal to reach 500k before doing any major work on it.

 

My 240 and 740 both have 250,000 miles and still run strong.

 

I bought my 90 740 with 236k on it....was told I was crazy. It has given me another 32k in a year and a half with only minor problems, most of which I've repaired myself. Service it regularly, take care of the 'little issues' right away and I'm sure you'll get a lot of life out of it.

 

It seems to me at my machine run 600.000-700.000
But on a speedmeter of 160.000 kilometers
