The rear of the car is off to the right of the front as it travels in a straight path down the road.

I took it to the alignment shop. Apparently nothing is out of alignment. They adjusted everything they could. Its still not rolling straight. Its better, but not right.

It was suggested that the rear end was angled, for some reason, in such a way that would cause the rear to shift to the right as the car moves forward. The car has a solid rear end without the self-leveling suspension.

So, I guess my questions are: What would cause the rear-end to be at an angle like that? Is there an adjustment that might fix it? If no adjustment, how can it be fixed? Would failing rear bushings be a likely culprit?

 

I'd first get a second opinion from another shop--obviously something is out of whack, and a decent lazer alignment rack should detect it...

 

Is your car lowered?
It could be the bushings on the panhard rod that are shot.
If lowered you should get the ipd adjustable panhard rod, course you could always fabricate an adjustable rod yourself.

No, its not lowered. How would lowering it make a difference? can someone give me a diagram or a picture or something please?

I would first off look under the car for any bent rear suspension components, specifically lower control arms.
You should then find a competent SPECIALIST wheel alignment store (not a chain car servicing store who also do wheel alignments) who can do a four wheel alignment. Tell them your problem and they will find it.

If it is lowered, the panhard rod (which is the rod that ties the axle and the body diagonally) might be pushed out of whack.

At least on the 240, the rear is non-adjustable unless adjustable rods are added. I am not sure about the 940.

 

It has a panhard rod, and it isnt adjustable. But its not lowered, but it does saag slightly in the rear compared to the front, so maybe that is it. I'm replacing the panhard rod bushings, the torque rod bushings, and the other two bushings... basically all of the bushings in the rear, and hopefully that helps. fortunately, I had a complete set of bushings laying around. so I figure, why not? it cant hurt anything. I'll let you know how it goes, im going to do one set of bushings at a time to try to isolate the issue and let others with the same issue know where to start.

 

Nothing appears bent in the rear. Took it to an alignment and frame specialist, and all I got was the "mechanic shrug" because apparently everything is "close enough to spec that it shouldn't matter," so apparently I'm just crazy.
