It's almost always illegal to remove the cat, but if your state doesn't do smog testing, then you can gut the cat, put it back, and enjoy the "Benefits". Just hope you don't have any exhaust leaks in to the cabin post-cat, because without it, you could be breathing in some nasty stuff. But other than that, no, it doesn't need one to run or anything.
