Default Catalytic converter removal

I know on some cars that you HAVE to have a catalytic converter for the car to run. Does a 1994 volvo 940 GL no turbo....need one??

thanks

No car "needs" a cat. yes you can remove it, also long as your dont have E-testing.

FYI. we don't have emission in FL but the cops will ticket ($500) for no cat, and they seem to know just where to look and who to pick on (mostly hopped up rice burners).

Above is the reason I've always emptied the cat rather than remove it, an empty cat is just a resonator.

depends on where you live.

It's almost always illegal to remove the cat, but if your state doesn't do smog testing, then you can gut the cat, put it back, and enjoy the "Benefits". Just hope you don't have any exhaust leaks in to the cabin post-cat, because without it, you could be breathing in some nasty stuff. But other than that, no, it doesn't need one to run or anything.

"No, Officer, I have a catalytic converter. Bought it last week. See, it's still even shiny and everything."

"Well okay then, have a nice day."
