Default catalytic converter removal

Hello, I have a 2002 Volvo V70 2.4 Turbo that I am being told has a bad catalytic converter. New converter + labor is very expensive. Mechanic/friend offered to eliminate it with a straight pipe to save money as we don't have emissions testing where I live. Curious of the potential mechanical complications or damage to the car (engine, turbo, etc.) that removing it may cause, even if it is done for a short period of time while saving money for a new one. Thank you.

labor for installing a new catalytic converter shouldn't be more than 1 hour of shop time (its only 6 bolts or so...) I've seen prices range from $300 on eBay to $425 for quality brands like Bosal so its not the most expensive repair. I can't imagine possible damage a straight pipe can create - but note where your O2 sensors are on your model - if there's one after the converter you may wind up with a check engine light unless you put in a spacer (google CEL BOSS O2 sensor spacer).

Got it changed for just under $600.00 with a converter off of ebay. Runs good now. Thanks for the input.
