Default Check Engine Light - Where to start?

Light came on in my 91 240 today.

Car runs great, smog test passed 5 months ago, all fluids are fine.

Any thoughts on where to start before I take it in to get the code read?

Thanks

May be nothing. Been told these lights come on periodically.

Take it to Autozone to get the codes read for free. Thats the first step, there really isn't anything that you can do before that.

Most common cause for the check engine light is a fault in the emissions control. A quick web search should return how to read the codes in this pre ODB- II setup. Having only owned early 940's I do not have any links readily available for the 240, sorry.
