check engine light or service engine light?

RE: check engine light or service engine light?
For 1996 and 1997 model yeats, service light can only be cleared at the dealership. Like the Seat Belt Restraint Light, most likely controlled by a proprietary Volvo computer. These can be cleared by an aftermarket $150 reset tool.
Check Light is set by Engine Management Computer or Engine Control Unit (ECU). This can be cleared with a regular ODB-I (1995 and older) or ODB-II (1996 and newer) scan and reset tool.

RE: check engine light or service engine light?
My service light is coming on and then going off after about 3 mins of driving. I have done the service that is recommended at 130,000, timing belt, etc...
1) Can I clear this light myself?
2) Is it the exact same procedure as clearing the check engine light? If not, which port?
Mine is the 95 with the module box under the hood.
Thanks Greg

Yes you can clear it your self. It is very similiar to pulling codes.
Put the wire in A7 Push the button 4 times when it lights up push it once then when it lights up again 5 more times then when it lights again one more time and it should reset.
So that is 4-1-5-1

^It's right next to the coolant.

Check out that link, and see if you can figure it out. Otherwise, I can try to explain it better, but that's how I learned...
Edit: By the way, the Service light doesn't actually tell you anything. It comes on at a certain interval (I think 10k for non-turbo and 5k for turbo or a time interval which I don't know).
And the link on top should only be done if your car is less than a '95. THIS IS VERY VERY IMPORTANT.

Wait, Turbo 92-94 only? I was told up to 95...But I will check..
This link says http://volvospeed.com/850slight.php 93-95 and doesn't make a disctinction about forced induction.

Dear All,
Just to add to your info, my 850 Turbo T5 is of 1994, but it has OBD-II DLC receptacle in front of the shifter, under the coin holder, as well as a label in the engine compartment that states "This car is certified for OBD-II". The car also has OBD-I terminal, which I usually use as I don't have a scanner.
Good night,
JPN

Put WHAT wire in A7. The link says A7 is an overall category with many subcategories. Can you define/explain? TYIA.

The 93-95 850s use an OBD1 diagnostics system (Yes, even the turbos ). There's a socket under the coin tray but that was designed to be used by a non-standard Volvo tool. The OBD2 standard (which is what the generic readers support) was implemented in 1996.
Now with that out of the way, the A7 refers to the OBD1 diagnotics "break out" box under the hood - look on the right side up front between the radiator and the intake manifold and you will see two small boxes with removable caps. There's a small jumper cable with a pin that you use to connect to the various modules (A or B with numbers). There's button and LED - push the button according to the procedure and the LED blinks the response codes.

PS There are different ports/processes to use to reset the service interval light or to read diagnostic codes...just save a bookmark to one of these sites.
